If the flooring goes in prior to cabinets there is still a whole lot of work going on over the new floor which can leave you with scratches gouges and cracked tile. Sometimes the decision of whether to install the cabinets or the floors first depends on other factors.

This is easiest with linoleum or vinyl tiles. Floor covering or finish flooring is the surface that you see and walk on not the subfloor under the underlayment or underlayment between subfloor and finished layer. You can see in the photo above that cabinets and granite countertops have been installed before the floor. Laminate floors should be installed after the cabinetry because the material needs to be able to expand and contract depending on humidity levels. It is just not our 1st choice. It means tiles don t have to be cut to awkward shapes to fit and also means there is a layer of tile under the toilet that will protect the floor from water should the sealant fail. There is nothing really wrong with putting the floor in after the cabinets however. Tile or linoleum on the other hand can run all the way to the wall with no problems.
